Diaries, 1934-1946.

Collection consists of seven daily diaries. The first two, dated 1934 and 1936, contain information regarding Jones' daily routine at the Icknield Street School in Hockley, Birmingham, England. These diaries present brief accounts of his extracurricular activities (gymnastics, reading, and visiting town with his parents). The other five diaries document Jones' service in the RAF. After he was sent to Asia in March 1943, the diaries document his ship's stops in Freetown, Sierra Leone; Capetown, South Africa; and Bombay, India, before Jones' arrival in Allahabad in June 1943. Topics during his service in India include daily military life and recreation (hiking, stamp collecting, watching movies and shows). Beginning in March 1946, the diaries document Jones' return to England through the Suez Canal region and the troops' reception in Southampton. From August 2 until the end of 1946, diary entries are sparse, although Jones notes that he has resumed his civilian work. Acquired as part of the William B. Hamilton Collection of British Manuscripts.
